Annotated Bibliography of Books and Articles on Dionysus
Research Project: Draw up an annotated bibliography of books and articles on the deity
or deities to whom you intend to dedicate yourself.
- Carpenter, Thomas H. and Faraone, Christopher A. (1993) Masks of Dionysus, Ithaca, NY: Cornell
University Press, ISBN 0-8014-8062-0
Compendium of articles about the different roles or masks of Dionysus. Each article is written by a
different author, ranging from very profound to incomprehensible. This makes the book a very uneven
read but still worthwhile for the few gems of wisdom.
- Harrison, Jane Ellen (1991) Prolegomena: To the Study of Greek Religion, Princeton, NJ: Princeton
University Press, ISBN 0-691-01514-7
Includes several articles about Dionysus. This is excellent material on the origin of Dionysus and his many
names.
- Johnston, Sarah Iles (1999) Restless Dead: Encounters between the Living and the Dead in Ancient
Greece, Los Angeles, CA: University of California Press, ISBN 0-520-21707-1
Briefly mentions Dionysus in his role of "goes", speaker to spirits.
- Kerényi, Carl (1976) Dionysos: Archetypal Image of Indestructible Life, Princeton, NJ:
Princeton University Press, ISBN 0-691-02915-6
Well researched and well written information on the history and worship of Dionysus in historical times
with some surprising conclusions.
- Otto, Walter (1965) Dionysus: Myth and Cult, Indianapolis, IN: Indiana University Press, ISBN
0-253-20891-2
Very good information on the history of Dionysus but tends to emphesis the darker aspects of his nature
and worship.
- Paris, Ginette (1990) Pagan Grace: Dionysos, Hermes, and Goddess Memory in Daily Life, Woodstock,
CN: Spring Publications, Inc., ISBN 0-88214-342-5
Excellent material on how to relate to Dionysus and bring his aspects into a person's daily life. However,
the author states clearly in the introduction that she considers the Immortals to be Jungian Archetypes.
