TIMING:

28th Hecatombaion, 28 days after the new moon after the summer solstice.

THEME:

Athena's birth date, community

HISTORY / LORE:

Athena was given a new peplos (dress) each year at this time. The festival included athletic contests such as foot races, torch races, boating races and horse races. It also included singing and music contests. Every four years a Great Panathenaia was held that lasted four or more days.

DECORATING IDEAS:

shield, spear, oak leaves owls, etc. to represent Athena; traditional birthday decorations; symbols of community or wisdom such as awards and membership in local community organizations.

GARMENTS:

considering the athletic activities, clothes should be comfortable and durable. Slogans or pictures on tee shirts that represent your community participation are very appropriate. Those not participating in the athletic contests, should wear something new (representing Athena's peplos) or your birth date suit (representing Athena's birth date). ;->

RITUAL CUP:

Beverages selected should represent social interaction such as beer, ale, tea or coffee.

RITUAL FOODS:

Normal picnic foods or pot luck where each participant brings a prepared dish; bar-b-que is especially appropriate since it can be prepared outdoors, has a culture built around the 'best' bar-b-que sauce and is associated with community gatherings.

ACTIVITIES:

The perfect modern activity for Panathenaia is a community picnic attended by all the neighbors in the area. Athletic events could include softball, flag football, relay races, three legged races and other sports that are open to all those present (this are not professional competitions, they're just fun). All activities should be designed to build community which honors Athena. NOTE: You should NOT ask Athena for anything at this time. Imagine how rude you would think someone who comes to your birthday party and asks YOU for a gift. Now consider the wisdom of being rude to someone with the power of a warrior goddess.

INVOCATION:

Pallas Athena, daughter of Zeus and Metis,
Wisdom personified, guardian of civilization,
Teacher of industry and art.
We call you now so that we may honor you
on this Panathenaia, the celebration of your birth.
